Modern remakes of 8bit 16bit console hits NES (Dendy) and SEGA 2

Some time ago, a nostalgic video was released on our channel dedicated to the re-releases of classic games from the Dendy and Sega consoles. If you missed it, I highly recommend checking it out.

This article will be reprints and sequels of old games available on PC that were not included in the first video.

You suggested many of the games in the comments, for which many thanks to all of you!

Flashback 2013

Our today's roster opens with a 2013 remake of Sega's Flashback.

It's a great platformer with great graphics and nice animations. The game has become really cult and won over many gamers.

In 2013, Ubisoft released a 3D remake of this classic platformer.

A familiar character, puzzles and battles await us in the game. The levels are drawn quite nicely, especially the levels in the city, where the atmosphere of the futuristic city of the future is perfectly conveyed.

The game has received mixed reviews from both players and critics, including a much lower difficulty compared to the original, and a less gloomy atmosphere.

However, the new Flashback is definitely worth attention. The updated locations are recognizable and the remake is really enjoyable to play.

Of the minuses: for some reason added by the developer pumping, which here, in my opinion, is absolutely useless, and an ambiguously redone plot. But I will not say that it spoils the game.

Of the advantages, I will note the pleasant graphics, good gameplay, and nostalgic feelings that this remake can cause among gamers who are familiar with the original. In addition, the game has full Russian localization, which is good news.

The link will be at the end of the article.

Also on Steam in 2019, the PC version of the original game became available.

I will not talk about it in detail, this is the very original transferred to personal computers.

Battletoads 2020

Oh, Batteltods! How many hopes there were, and how many burning farts ...

In 2020, Microsoft re-released the iconic Battletoads. The game came out, in my opinion, not very well. Too cartoonish, bright, absolutely nothing remained of the old style. And the plot is replete with dubious quality jokes. This is navryatli what fans of the series have been expecting.

However, the gameplay is quite well developed, and the artwork too. Despite its questionable style, it is clear that it was done with attention to detail. Personally, the remake did not go to me, but maybe someone, after a personal acquaintance, will think differently.

We have a detailed separate video about Battletoads 2020 on our channel, I recommend watching if you missed it.

Battletoads (2020)

Motor Rock

In 1993, the crazy Rock'N'Roll Racing was released on the Sega Blizzard console. And yes! Blizzard did more than just Warcraft and Overwatch.

It was a wildly dynamic chopper with a bunch of cannons. I think many Sega owners remember how they famously smashed their rivals' cars to pieces. By the way, Blizzard has released a re-release of the classic games - Blizzard Arcade Collection. You can buy it as part of a festive collection dedicated to the studio's 30th anniversary.

In 2013, a small studio released a remake of this great game called Motor Rock. The remake perfectly follows the traditions of the original, all the same trash on the ring tracks under the freaky Mouzon. By default, the camera view here, as in the original, is isometric. However, it became possible to change the angle from a third person, which is much more convenient to control. The game has a variety of weapons of cars and tracks located on different planets.

Motor Rock appears to have been unlicensed, and the game has been removed from sale on Steam.

Rocket Knight

Many happy Sega owners are probably familiar with the Sparkster games and

Rocket Knight Adventures in which we played as a knight-possum with a sword and a rocket pack.

In the game we have to fight an army of pigs and robots. An incredibly groovy, driving toy that does not let you get bored even for a second.

Rocket Knight Adventures and Sparkster were released for the Sega Mega Drive in 1993 and 1994, respectively.

In 2010, Konami decided to release a sequel to the iconic series. And released Rocket Knight in 3D. The game is also divided into stages, like the originals, and quite carefully follows the canons of the series. But still brings new mechanics.

The levels here alternate: the level on the ground, the level in the air, and so on. Rocket Knight is a great platformer that can prove that old games are not as simple as they seem, and can surprise.

I highly recommend it to everyone who is familiar with the origins of the series, as well as to fans of dynamic platformers.

Rocket Knight is available on PC, PS3 and XBOX360.

Killer Instinct

Fighting ... how many cool fighting games were on consoles: Tekken, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, after all! There was also a cool and dynamic fighting game Killer Instinct on such a console as Super Nintendo.

Killer Instinct first appeared on slot machines in the United States, and was later ported to the SNES and Nintendo 64. In our latitudes, it was not very well known, as the SNES consoles themselves, but that does not make it any less cool.

At E3 in 2013, Microsoft announced the relaunch of Killer Instinct exclusively for the Xbox One, which delighted fans of the series.

In 2013, the game passed me by since I was not an Xbox owner.

In 2017, the updated fighting game became available for PC. And this is one of the best fighting games ever. Seriously! Cheerful, dynamic and very beautiful. One of the features of the series is the coolest music.

The music for the series was written by the notorious Mick Gordon, the one who wrote the music for the Doom series. But music is music, but what about the game itself. Well, firstly, the local combat system is significantly different from the same Mortal Kombat, it is simpler and simply different. Basically, the bet is placed on a series of blows and a combo breaker system. In order to create real madness on the screen, you do not need to memorize combinations at all, it is enough to master the local principle of combat in a couple of minutes. And pressing just one button can give you a lot of fun.

There are plenty of characters here too. All of them are as different as possible and each with its own fighting style, strengths and weaknesses. There's even Rush from Battletoads here.

I definitely recommend it to all fans of the genre.

Killer Instinct

Bionic Commando 2009

Recently, in one of our YouTube videos, we talked about the remaster of Bionic Commando Rearmed, which completely repeats the original from the NES console. However, in 2009, a remake of this game was released, which is a third-person shooter of the same name.

In it, we still control a fighter with a cybernetic hand. This game is more likely even a sequel, since it does not repeat, but continues the plot of the original.

The main character under our control must confront terrorists and save the world. The game has an interactive environment and a good combat system. The cybernetic hand is used both as a weapon and as a means of transportation, and due to the chosen genre and new technologies, the potential of cybernetics is revealed better than in the original. Our character, with the help of his modification, effectively finishes off the enemies and dashingly flies around the locations. A kind of cybernetic Spider-Man turns out.

It looks and plays quite interesting. However, over time, the gameplay still seemed monotonous to me.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty 2015

Back in 1997, the game Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee was released on Sony PlayStation and PC.

A puzzle platformer in which we, playing as an alien of the Mudoken race, tried to get out of a meat factory in order not to become canned food. The game was unique for many reasons, including graphics, gameplay and non-standard tasks that had to be solved.

In 2010, a refurbished version of the original game appeared on Steam.

Well, we'll talk about a modern remake called Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty 2015.

The remake is based on the first part. The entire plot, locations and mechanics have been carefully transferred from the original. It's the same exciting platformer with a modern twist, and it plays the same way.

The game itself is quite serious and hardcore. Although it looks like a platformer, you need to use your brain well and constantly solve puzzles. Like the original, the new incarnation is very pleasing with its graphics and style. The game is incredibly addictive, if you are not familiar with the series, but love beautiful and original games that make you drive gray matter inside your skull, feel free to download New 'n' Tasty, and do not hesitate - this is a masterpiece.

Saving your race from extermination is not easy and exciting - I definitely recommend it.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty

On April 6, a new game based on the Oddworld: Soulstorm universe will be released. So, very soon, we will have the opportunity to once again plunge into this strange world.

Wait for a review of new items on our channel.

Oddworld: Soulstorm

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

What a cool game it was on Dendy! The first levels my friends and I rubbed to holes.

Things were no worse on the Sega. This franchise had to continue to delight us with new games. And they appeared.

I spent a lot of time looking for a good remake or sequel. From all that I could find, unambiguously good new games in the universe, alas, no.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of 2003 is the first 3D PC game in the turtle universe, timed to coincide with the release of the animated series of the same year, and the plot repeats the first season.

The graphics in the game are not bad, and they do not cause discomfort even now.

In terms of gameplay, there are already more questions for the game. The combat system is boring and monotonous, as are the actual enemies at the first levels.

I could not find this game in digital stores, so I will not leave links to it. I think you yourself know where you can find it.

Its sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle nexus, is not much better.

The controls and graphics for personal feelings have become worse, and the locations look extremely poor. In addition, the camera angle has been chosen very poorly here, frankly it is not convenient to play. This part, in my subjective opinion, is absolutely not worth attention.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutants in Manhattan (2016)

In 2016, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutants in Manhattan tried to revive the franchise.

I can't say that she did it successfully, but the game itself is not bad.

The presence of all your favorite characters in the series will be a nice bonus. The graphics style is pleasing to the eye again and it looks pretty in 2021. Conceptually, each level represents a vast location, which we clear from enemies, and then we pick the Boss. In open locations, turtles climb buildings, no worse than Spider-Man.

Locations, by the way, are quite diverse here, and do not have time to get bored. It looks great and is fun to play, but ... Enemies have been poking around here for too long, which spoils the dynamics and overall feel of the game. And when playing with computer partners, during a battle with an enemy, when the whole team runs up, it looks like some kind of mess. Considering that the enemies are not immediately carried out, the partners have time to run up to almost everyone. Enemies that are more serious are taken out for a really long time.

And the whole point is that here the stake is made on the online component, and the game should be treated as a kind of MMO. We swing our character to take out enemies more efficiently, and so on. I think that the mechanics of the good old beat-up (more enemies that are carried out with one or two hits) would go to the advantage of the game.

From my personal feelings, this is not an unambiguously bad game, and it was nevertheless pleasant for me to get acquainted with it, maybe we even get stuck with friends somehow.

But for a single player game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutants in Manhattan could not tighten me.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™: Mutants in Manhattan

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rescue palooza.

One of the subscribers of our channel in the comments suggested a homemade Tmnt Rescue Palooza. This game is an homage to classic 8- and 16-bit games made by an enthusiast named Merco X. The game is a good old 8-bit bitmap.

The developer promises us 60 playable characters, 17 levels, 4 bonus levels, local co-op for up to 4 players, improved graphics and many references to the original cartoons and toy series.

All levels repeat in places those of the originals. The game is sticky.

Of the minuses, I note that I had to tinker a little to properly adjust the gamepad. Otherwise, everything is cool.

Pixels only, hardcore only! Olds will love it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rescue-Palooza!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

Recently developer Tribute Games announced a new turtle game called Shredder's Revenge, which should be out soon.

I personally look forward to this game. Since in the trailer we are promised a good old school bitmap in pixel art style. Be sure to follow our content so as not to miss the review of the new product, which we will definitely do as soon as the release takes place. In the meantime, we are waiting, and we hope that the game will not repeat the fate of the re-release of Battletoads.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

I’m a little cunning, and now we’ll talk about the re-release of the game that was released not on Sega or Dendy, but on the first PlayStation - Crash Bandicoot.

Those who managed to drive a marsupial badger in their youth will definitely be pleased with the re-release of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which is available on Steam.

The re-release includes a remake of the first three games in the series on a new engine with awesome graphics and full preservation of all levels and plot.

After not very successful games, the franchise took a long hiatus. And in 2017, N. Sane Trilogy came out for PlayStation 4. And in 2018, the game became available for PC as well.

Playing N. Sane Trilogy is a pleasure - everything is perfect here. Management, graphics and music. Definitely a "like" and a recommendation. This is a great example of how to make remakes.

Crash Bandicoot™ N. Sane Trilogy

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

After the success of N. Sane Trilogy, it was only a matter of time before the sequel came out. And in the past 2020, the fourth part of the series was released.

The publisher ignored all games released after the 3rd part on the PlayStation. Another studio was engaged in the development, and they coped perfectly well.

In addition to a really stunning picture, the game will delight with some gameplay innovations. There are guides along which Kresh will slide, there are ropes that you need to cling to in order to jump over the abyss. Added wall tracks with greetings from the Prince of Persia.

In addition, 4 new masks have been added giving new abilities:

The 1st one switches the dimension, transferring various objects or parts of the location from one dimension to another;

2nd gives you a furious spin, thanks to which you can make high jumps and glide;

3rd slows down for a short time;

The 4th changes gravity - the bottom becomes the top, and the top becomes the bottom.

All this makes the gameplay much more varied.

And the first 3 parts I would not call simple, but the fourth part is real hardcore. It does not seem easy from the very beginning, and over time, the game begins to wildly combine different situations and gameplay elements, forcing your chair to spontaneously ignite. So take care of your psyche, yourself and your children.

Variety is also added by playing for side characters, even including the series antagonist Neo Cortex, and the gameplay for each will be different.

It's About Time is definitely a great game, available for PC from the Blizzard Net store.

The link will be at the end.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow

Are there oldies here who remember what 8-bit vampires look like, and not the current glamorous bloodsuckers?

Back in 1987, for the Dendy console, the masterpiece Castlevania from the Konami studio was. It was a dark and gothic platformer in which we, armed with a whip, fought against monsters.

The franchise consisted of many games on various consoles NES, Sega Mega Drive, Gameboy and Nintendo Ds. In our open spaces, most often, we met the first three parts of Castlevania for the NES console (aka Dendy) and Castlevania - Bloodlines for Sega Mega Drive.

In 2010, the series was completely relaunched by Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

From a platformer, the genre moved to a slasher a la DMC.

The plot has also been completely rewritten. In the restart, we play as a knight of the holy order of Gabriel Belmond, who must defeat evil by destroying 3 powerful Lords of Shadows.

Lords of Shadow has about 15 hours of story-driven gameplay, which is not at all bad.

A simple game cannot be called, you cannot avoid difficulties, the game, although not old school, but like the good old ones, you will have to sweat.

In our arsenal there are 2 types of lash (directional and circular), 2 enhancing magic, well, several variations of combo attacks. For the rest, the usual slasher - we slash enemies, in the battle with Mini-Bosses the strategy is familiar - hit, dodge, hit. There are QTE elements in the battle with Big Bosses. Elements of platforming and all sorts of puzzles will dilute the battles.

To me personally, in some moments the game reminded me of the good old Prince of Persia Warrior Within.

Locations are beautifully drawn! I bow to game designers for that.

Despite the outdated graphics for 10 years, the eye will rejoice. Seriously! The game looks great. Both gothic castles and forests create a great visual experience.

Lords of Shadow is instantly addictive. One problem - where can I find that for so long?

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Ultimate Edition

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2

In 2014, the second part of the updated Lords of Shadow 2 series was released, which pulled up the main advantages of the previous part.

The graphics are better, the atmosphere is darker, the music is at the same cool level. The action in the game takes place in our time, and this does not spoil the style at all. The modern city looks as gothic as the old castles. The game has become darker. Now our main character is the Prince of Darkness, after all, and this leaves its imprints.

According to the plot, we have to stop the coming of Satan in exchange for the long-awaited death. The gameplay has migrated from the previous part, with minor changes. The game will also feature puzzles and parkour.

Otherwise, this is also an excellent slasher with a solid plot, cinematography and epic boss battles.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

Castlevania Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate

Is there anything similar to the original platformer?

Castlevania Mirror of Fate 2013 is a mixture of platformer and slasher that is part of the repackaged series, and is plotted between the first and second part of Lords of Shadow.

It looks unusual, but still nice. Despite the different styles, Mirror of Fate mechanically resembles its larger counterparts.

To me personally, this game seemed boring, but still worthy of attention.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD

That's where we come to an end, I know that these are far from all the reincarnations of old games from consoles, so there will be more articles and videos on this topic.

All games in this article are available on PC.
